Abstract
Following its introduction as free flap by Dr. Yang Guofan in 1973, the forearm flap based on radial artery has quickly become recognized as a very reliable and relatively easy to use.
The frearm flap has thin, pliable skin and scant subutaneous layer : These characteristics have made it a useful flap in many areas of reconstructive surgery. Much of the reliability results from the constant vascular pattern of the frearm and the large size of vessels which greately simplify the technical aspects of microvascular surgery. An interesting hemodynamic characteristics of this flap is that the venous drainage may be quite satisfactory in retrogade direction. It is the basis for the successful transplantation of the reverse forearm flap.
We have experienced 7cases of forearm free flap fo&- reconstruction in patients wth introral tumorectomy and the release of the burn scar contracture of the anterior neck, 3 cases of reverse forearm flap for soft tissue reconstruction in a patient witil crushing injury on hand, a patient with soft tissue defect oti forearm due to burn, and a patient with first web space contracture due to postburn scar contracture. The results of the these operations have been exceedingly satisfactory.
